You are comparing generative engine optimisation and answer engine optimisation decks. The labels are new. The failure is old: a count with no URL behind it, sold as if a model were a media buy.

What those decks actually sold

Most of the decks we see this year collapse three jobs into one line. Generative engine optimisation. Answer engine optimisation. “Citations.”

The first job is retrieval: can a model find a page, trust it, and use it when it writes an answer. The second is extraction: can an answer engine lift a clean span without rewriting your meaning. The third is not a job. It is a screenshot someone hopes will appear.

A citation is an outcome of retrieval plus extraction plus whatever the model does that week. Nobody on our side of the table controls the third part. A pitch that leads with a citation quota is selling the part it cannot do.

If a vendor cannot walk a URL, an entity, and a paragraph they would be willing to see quoted, they are not doing generative engine optimisation. They are selling a mood.

Answer engine optimisation starts with extractable pages

Answer engine optimisation is narrower and older than the acronym. Featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews, voice answers, and a growing set of chatbot retrievals all prefer a span they can lift.

Answer-ready copy leads with the answer, then the proof, then the edge cases. It uses the question the buyer typed, not the slogan the brand prefers. It keeps units, dates, names, and jurisdictions consistent so a model does not have to “help.”

AEO is not a schema plugin and a hope. Schema helps machines find the block. The block still has to be true, short enough to extract, and unique enough to be worth extracting.

A source page is a URL we would allow an engine to quote. Not a tag archive. Not a thin location page with the city name swapped. Not a press mention we do not control.

The useful next move on a weak inventory is not “more blogs.” It is deciding which URLs are allowed to be the record, then making those URLs complete.

Entities are the nouns a system can hang a fact on: the company, the service line, the people, the cities, the regulations, the products. If those nouns drift, the model rewrites you into a neighbour.

What happens when the model does not cite us anyway.

If the vendor answers with a tool stack, a prompt library, and a promised mention count, the pitch is fake. Tools can help crawl, cluster, and watch SERPs. They cannot obligate Gemini.

Take the decks in front of you and strike every citation number. What remains should be source pages, entities, and answer-ready copy. If nothing remains, that vendor is done.

Then look at your own site the same way. Pick one question a serious buyer would ask. Find the URL that should answer it. Read the first seven lines. If you would not let an engine quote those lines, that is the job - not a new acronym, not a prompt pack.
